Some questions about the origins of Hawaiian pizza remain unanswered.
The focus is primarily on enjoyment as you eat Hawaiian pizza, spaghetti bologna, and Co. C. Now and then you might wonder why these foods are named after countries or cities. Of course, it makes sense that the food is from the named place. But the stories behind the origin often prove the opposite.
Pizza Hawaii
In Italy, eating pineapple pizza is almost a crime. Accordingly, it seems reasonable that Hawaiian pizza does not come from Italy. Although the name suggests Hawaii, pineapple-topped pizza doesn’t even come from Hawaii. In fact, it was a Greek who invented the most controversial pizza in the world. The restaurant owner immigrated to Canada when he was young. There he experimented with Italian specialties until Hawaiian pizza was born. But how did pizza finally get its name? The logic is simple: Hawaii is considered one of the best growing areas for pineapples.
Spaghetti bologna
Spaghetti Bolognese, known around the world, does not exist in its homeland. The Italian city of Bologna is known for its excellent food. Ragù alla bolognese is one of the many specialties of Bologna. But the pasta classic is a big misunderstanding, because it is only combined with outside spaghetti.
You will not find a dish called Spaghetti Bolognese on the menu in Bologna restaurants, except in tourist establishments. In bologna, meat sauce is served with tagliatelle. The reason: the sauce does not stick to the spaghetti. How the thin noodles got under the ragout is not clear today. It was probably Italian immigrants who brought the dish to America. There it is quickly prepared with other types of pasta.
Luxembourgish
Luxembourgerli from Confiserie Sprüngli are known throughout Switzerland. A Luxembourger who worked at the Confiserie Sprüngli brought his delicious recipe to Zurich in the 1950s. The recipe originally came from a French dessert, but was modified by Sprüngli. Macarons get their name from a confection called Luxemburgerli because of its origins.
Donut
A cake made from sweet yeast dough with a jam filling is known as a Berliner. In fact, in the 18th century, a Berlin confectioner created balls of yeast dough and baked them in hot fat. This is where the sweet pasta gets its name. Everywhere in Berlin, however, Berliners have a different name: in the German capital, Berliners are called Pancakes.
New York Cheesecake
New York Cheesecake is known for its cereal base and cream cheese filling. Cheesecake wasn’t invented in New York! The ancient Greeks made the first known cheesecake. However, immigrant bakers in New York created a version that became famous around the world. Credit for inventing the New York cheesecake goes to German immigrant Arnold Reuben: New York-style cheesecake was actually Reuben’s attempt at a regular cheesecake.
